STRESS
Did you know?
Stress is the most common occupational hazard.
According to surveys, it is responsible, or at least
partly responsible, for over 60% diseases. It can cause problems and
conflicts in relationships, at home and at work.
How many people are said to be Stressed at work?
If it is true that six out of every ten people
suffer from work-related stress, the real figure is probably even higher.
Many cases probably go unreported because sufferers fear to lose jobs
or promotion opportunities, because of anxiety at being labelled 'depressed'
or 'stressed out'.
Do I have Stress?
Either you or somebody you know does. Stress
can have many symptoms, including chronic fatigue, poor concentration,
depression, anxiety, frequent infections, headaches, visual problems,
panic attacks, sleep interference, digestive disturbances, mood swings,
self-doubt and problems with eyesight. In itself, stress is neither
good nor bad. For many it provides an impetus to change, to grow and
to learn, and to assert their rights and needs better, all of which
is good.
How Can Stress be Good?
When first stressed, a healthy body reacts
vigorously. This is the 'alarm' response. This is good: it warns us
something is wrong, and makes us do something about it.
Not so good are the next stages. Under continued onslaught of the same stressor,
we learn to adapt, but our energy goes down. We learn to 'put up' with it.
This is the adaptation stage. Many people are at this stage.
Eventually, if the stress continues indefinitely, the body's reserves are exhausted,
and we quite possibly cease to have symptoms - but can't function at anything
like our true potential. At this third, exhaustion, level, we may even think
that we need the food or substance, and can't do without it. We may even have
no symptoms and think we are well, assuming that others share our lack of energy
and 'go'.
What can I do about it ?
If you recognise yourself in any of the above,
you've made the first step. If the stress comes from relationships
or work, or from money troubles, you may have to make an effort to
confront the problem, because it won't go away unless you do. Sometimes
you may have to walk away from it. More often, getting it out in the
open with people sorts it out.
You can help yourself in other ways. Unless your health is too fragile, try
to take more exercise. Exercise nearly always helps stress symptoms. Also start
cutting down on caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, social drugs and sugar-rich foods,
which may give you a short-term boost, but make you feel considerably worse
when the effect has worn off.
Next, consider treatment. Some symptoms may be due to, or the cause of, other
symptoms. Here there are many treatments that can help, varying from massage
(never overlook the benefits of a good massage - hands-on therapy, first and
best!) to acupuncture, herbs and homeopathy. Counselling may help you face
up to your situation, and enable you to see it from other points of view.
