So – considering alternative medicine - what works? Lots of research money goes on this, with results that some find laughably obvious. The organic vs inorganic food argument continues, sometimes eclipsed by the dispute over genetically modified food. Quackbusters would have you believe only orthodox medicine works, the alternatives being at best placebo, at worst ruthless exploitation of the gullible.
Is it possible that orthodox medicine works and is best for some people? Of course! Is it possible that ‘natural’ medicine works and is best for other people? You decide, but consider the following, recent, examples.

  • 82-year old after a stroke, had excruciating pain in her fingers on the paralysed side. Painkillers administered in hospital made no difference. Pain went after one treatment of acupuncture.
  • Back pain from lifting heavy carpets. Had no benefit from physiotherapy. Cured after one Bowen session, though had a second treatment to be sure.
  • Large painful cyst in labia: two treatments of acupuncture and a daily homeopathic remedy removed it completely where normal painkillers didn’t touch the pain.
  • Depression, anxiety, tiredness and drinking too much alcohol; a businessman. Sorted by occasional treatments of acupuncture.
  • A cat, 18 years old, suffered kidney problems, losing weight and hair, no interest in life, wouldn’t feed. Following discussion with a homeopath, the cat’s owner gave a homoeopathic remedy, after which the cat regained interest, energy and appetite, and lived – with the occasional repeat of the remedy, for nearly two further years.
  • After bronchitis, a 60-year old had a continuing sore throat, cough that worsened through the day and evening, and tiredness. Although the cough and sore throat were generally better after sleep, the tiredness wasn’t, and the man needed frequent short rests and naps during the day. The condition was completely cured after 3 days of Chinese herbs.
  • Headaches and chilliness, ongoing for years, in a vegetarian. After a small alteration in her diet (not including meat!) and a homeopathic remedy, she started feeling warm, and the headaches went.

In almost all these cases, treatment followed a careful consultation and examination. In each case the condition was diagnosed according to at least one medical model of disease. The best treatment – out of several possible alternatives – was chosen, explained to the patient and after agreement, given. (Which treatment didn’t follow the careful consultation and examination? The cat! We relied on a careful description by the owner whose decision it was to seek homeopathic advice. We don’t treat animals, not least because under UK law treatment of animals must be undertaken only by a qualified vet. But an owner can ask for help and advice, and treat the animal himself or herself.)

Using therapies such as Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Herbs and Homeopathy, combined with good Nutrition, we have helped thousands of people to get rid of pain, and shown them how to reach and maintain good health.

We call what we do ‘Natural’ because it uses your own body’s ability to heal itself. What we do prompts and guides it back to health. When you see your doctor, he or she will usually treat you with a drug that works against the symptoms you have. For pain, take an analgesic, for inflammation take an anti-inflammatory, for depression an anti-depressant, for a non-virus bug he’ll give you an antibiotic, and so on.

These medicines were often tested on conditions quite different from those they are now used for, and their side-effects frequently emerge only after prolonged use by doctors. What is worse, we assume that when our symptoms have gone, we are cured. But this overlooks the experience of some of the most intelligent and astute doctors who ever lived over the last 5000 years.

Their experience was that if you suppress a symptom without curing the underlying reason for it, you don’t cure the patient. Instead, you either tire him or send the condition to a deeper, more serious, level of illness.

We don’t think this is good medicine, and to be honest, neither do doctors, when they see what we can do. But don’t discount your doctor! He or she has to be extra-bright to be allowed to train, and they learn how to keep you alive, to put you together again when you break things and to stop you dying. We need our doctors!
Another difference between how we try to work and modern medicine, is in understanding how disease progresses through the body’s defences. Constantine Hering summarised this in his ‘Law of Cure’. As you become more ill, you feel worse, or you need more medicine to keep you feeling the same.

What we do is search for the underlying reason for the illness, its ‘root’, as distinct from the symptoms that in Chinese Medicine are called its ‘branches’. If the root isn’t put right, how can the branches return to health? If, as can happen with your doctor, you treat only the leaves on the branches, you may kill them. What does this do for the root?
